What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop, typically emerging between the ages of 15 and 25. Because most jaws don't have enough room to accommodate them comfortably, they often come in at awkward angles or fail to fully erupt. Dr. Esparza watches their development with panoramic X-rays starting around age 15, so our team can spring into action if and when it’s needed.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

While not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, many teens and young adults do. When there isn't enough space in your jaw, emerging wisdom teeth can push against their neighbors, causing crowding and bite alignment issues.
They can also be difficult to clean properly, increasing the risk of cavities, gum irritation, and infection. In some cases, cysts can form in your jaw around an unerupted tooth.
Removing problem wisdom teeth early—before complications arise—is almost always the easier, more comfortable path.
What to Expect From the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

Before your child’s extraction, Dr. Esparza will review their X-rays and examine the area to plan a safe, smooth procedure. On the day of their appointment, the treatment area will be thoroughly numbed so they won't feel any pain.
Each tooth is then carefully loosened and removed. Once the extraction is complete, we'll clean the site, place gauze to control any bleeding, and provide you with aftercare instructions. Following these carefully will make a big difference in how fast and smooth your child’s recovery goes. So, help them all you can by going over them and offering gentle reminders.
As always, our team is just a phone call away if you have questions during recovery.
Recovering From Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Most patients feel tired and a little sore for a day or two, which is completely normal. Plan to let your child get lots of rest. We also recommend applying cold compresses to reduce swelling and taking over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
For the first few days, have them stick to soft foods, avoid drinking through straws, and avoid swishing or brushing vigorously during their oral care routine. Any discomfort will typically fade after a couple of days, but if your child still feels discomfort or if any pain worsens, let our team know.
