In fact, brushing and flossing your prosthetics is equally important. That’s because though they’re not biological, your false teeth can still become dirty and damaged if you don’t maintain your oral hygiene. If you’ve noticed your dentures aren’t smelling so great lately, here are a few reasons this could happen, and what you can do to stop it.

Denture Dilemma: What’s that Smell?

There is no shortage of things that could cause dentures to smell bad, ranging from your diet, oral bacteria, and even your own saliva or lack thereof. Furthermore, if you’ve been using a denture adhesive, anything odorous could be sticking to it along with your gums.

If you notice your dentures are starting to stink, the first step is to give them a good cleaning. Be sure to brush the entire prosthetic with a soft-bristled brush and mild hand soap or cleanser. Floss between each tooth and then rinse them very well. You can also use a denture soak to help loosen debris. Be aware, however, that if you haven’t been cleaning them regularly this may not go far enough to remove the odors, so if they still smell bad contact your dentist to have them cleaned.

Preventing Denture Odors

Properly cleaning your dentures is just one step in keeping them looking and smelling their best. Another key to preventing odor is to keep them soaking in water or denture soak when they’re not in your mouth. This them stay hydrated so they don’t become cracked or warped. While proper fit is essential, it is also important to avoid cracks, as they can let bacteria and debris into your prosthetic that make them not only smell bad but also put you at a higher risk for infection and injury. If you notice yours have stopped fitting correctly or there are any visible cracks, chips or other damage, contact your dentist as soon as possible for help.

Stay on Schedule with Dental Appointments

Finally, even if you have no natural teeth, you still need to visit your dentist regularly for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments. These check-ups not only keep an eye on your oral health and provide lifesaving oral cancer screenings, but they also are a great opportunity for your dentist to examine your dentures. If they have any damage, odor, or have stopped fitting, this can be addressed at these appointments, and your prosthetics can either be repaired or you can begin the process of replacing them.

Remember, your dentures shouldn’t have an odor at all. If cleaning alone is not going far enough to remove foul smells, schedule an appointment with your dentist for help as soon as possible.

About Dr. Esparza

Dr. Sarah Esparza earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Fairfield University and her Doctor of Dental Surgery from University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore.
