Pieces of food and other debris can get wedged in when you eat, drink, and so on. Still, how should you get such objects “unstuck” from your smile? Your local Virginia Beach dentist is here to address this very question. To that end, please keep reading to learn four ways to handle something stuck between your teeth.

Gently Floss Near the Object

Naturally enough, one method for removing the stuck object is to floss near it. Doing so will often remove the irritant.

Make sure to act gently if you do choose to floss. If you jam the string without a care, you could easily wedge the debris deeper and inflame your gums; you should string the floss slowly instead. That said, you can always try other options if you don’t have (or simply dislike) traditional floss. These might include a floss pick, a water flosser, etc.

Push with Your Tongue

Another idea is to try using your tongue to dislodge the object. After all, this part of your mouth is very handy for removing things stuck in your teeth.

At the same time, make sure you don’t overdo things with your tongue. Overworking this organ can cause your jaw to ache, as well as chewing and speech issues. Getting rid of a stuck object isn’t worth suffering such problems; you can always try a different approach.

Rinse Out Your Mouth

If your stuck object is stubborn, using floss or your tongue may not help much. You should try doing an oral rinse in that case.

Indeed, rinsing your mouth is often enough to dislodge food from between teeth. Just grab a glass of water (or a similar drink) and swish it for a bit. Once you spit it out, you’ll likely be free of the annoying debris and ready to move on.

Eat a Crunchy Food

Eating more may not seem like a good way to eliminate “leftovers” in your teeth. Even so, having crunchy food can dislodge such debris in many cases.

The truth is that crunchy veggies act like a natural, edible toothbrush. By chewing and biting them, you’d give your teeth a good workout that can dislodge stuck foods. Given that fact, try eating some carrot sticks or crisp celery to solve your problem.

If the tips above don’t help enough, please don’t panic. Just see your local dentist – they’ll gladly get rid of the “something” stuck between your teeth.

About the Practice

Esparza Family Dentistry is based in Virginia Beach, VA.
